    some people predict that the wars of the future will be fought between transnational corporations, not states.

    European empires began with independent companies taking over large parts of the world (the East India Company in India, the Dutch East India Company in Indonesia, a Belgain company took over the Congo etc etc). Later, when the companies abused their positions, national governments had to take over the territories.
