‘Hindi Sad Diamonds' (from Moulin Rouge)

Still from 'Hindi Sad Diamons' number in Moulin Rouge.

Watched the last half of Moulin Rouge last night. I mentally started blocking out a stage adaptation of the show in my head – I’m guessing the rights are already nailed down and will probably be produced in about 10 years or so.

Totally love the Bollywood/Indian flavored production number – it reminds me a bit of the Balinese version of ‘Vogue’ from that one Madonna concert DVD:

I downloaded the song ‘Hindi Sad Diamonds’ on iTunes.

    i love the song too!

the song’s tamil hook is a remixed version of the hit Hindi film song, “Chamma Chamma” from Rajkumar Santoshi’s “China Gate”. it’s originally sung by Alka Yagnik. =)

Rumor had it a few years back that they were adapting this Moulin Rouge for the stage. I was all excited…yet it never came to be…just one day it was there, the next gone. 🙁

Looks like the director stiffed Anu Malik:

“When internationally renowned director Baz Luhrmann decided to include Anu Malik’s composition, Chamma chamma, in his musical, Moulin Rouge, starring Nicole Kidman, Malik was on cloud nine. But his joy was shortlived. While both lyricist Sameer and singer Alka Yagnik have been credited for on the soundtrack of the film, Malik’s name is missing on the cassette and CD sleeves.”

Can I tell you how many times I’ve listened to this song yet? I almost have the entire staging for the number in my head. That’s something I learned when I directed a production of Cinderella years ago (yes – the sappy Rodgers and Hammerstein one – I managed to pack it full of angst). I’d just play the song over and over again and let my imagination fill in the blanks.

WOW!!!!! I absolutely love this song! It puts me in SUCH a great mood just from listening to it! When I bought the dvd i kept replaying the scene because it was so beautiful -the beginning scene also where the green fairy is singing the words ” the hills are alive with the sound of music” and the beat breaks down. LOVE IT 😉
