Gwen Stefani's Geisha Entourage

Gwen Stefani and her harajuku girls

I don’t follow Gwen Stefani at all. I did buy ‘Hollaback Girl’ on iTunes because I liked the bass line only to find the rest of the song sucked.

I didn’t know that Gwen has a quartet of asian girls following her around that were inspired by harajuku fashion but devolve into the usual asian stereotypes: (via Angry Asian Man)

Stefani has taken the idea of Japanese street fashion and turned these women into modern-day geisha, contractually obligated to speak only Japanese in public, even though it’s rumored they’re just plain old Americans and their English is just fine. She’s swallowed a subversive youth culture in Japan and barfed up another image of submissive giggling Asian women.

Didn’t George Michael do the same thing in the late 80’s, except to make him look hetero?

Pah-leez! Gwen is anything but a racist or a diva. She’s just a plain old Orange County chick who got lucky with a great garage band…No Doubt. (I’m not disparaging her talent…she has a great set of pipes and is a fabulous songwriter).

She has great admiration for the Japanese. (If you were to listen to the rest of the album you would know that but as it is we jump to conclusions over soundbytes.)

But when did it become friggin non-PC to just have fun? Sorry but you hit a nerve when you diss Gwen.

As an almost “senior”, I am completely enchanted with the incredible talents of Gwen Stefanni — I buy her albums ’cause I like the music AND her humor.

I cannot think of a better way to put some light into an uncomfortable cultural corner that by performance art as Stefanni is doing, And to pair it with street fashion — brillant!

How many magazine articles about women in Japan who prostitute themselves to get money for high fashion and high price handbags or boots does it take for people to “notice” the hyprocracy!

    Look and learn!!!
