Careful With Money

ELAINE: How would you like it if someone told YOU the truth?

GEORGE: Like what? What could they say?

ELAINE: There are plenty of things to say.

GEORGE: Like what? I’m bald? What is it specifically? Is, is there an odor I’m not aware of? Give me one.

…

ELAINE: You are very careful with money.

GEORGE: I’m cheap? You think I’m CHEAP? How could you say that to me? I can’t believe this. How could you say that to me? I mean I’m not really working right now. When I was working I spent baby.

Sometimes I think I’m cheap. Like I have two air conditioners – one in the main room with my computer and one in the bedroom. I only want to have one on at a time. I think it is wasteful to have both on at the same time. Same with cranking down the AC so it is so cold you have to have a blanket. Maybe it is too much reading about peak oil.

I’m with you, Andy. I think there’s a difference between not wanting to be wasteful and being cheap. Not wanting to air-condition a room no one is using isn’t cheap. Taking Ron to McD’s for his b-day (unless, of course, that’s where he wants to go) is cheap.

You know what, I don’t care if my significant other took me to mcDs for my birthday. At least he remembered and that he’s with me. That’s just me, a simple man.

Although it is different if it is HIS birthday…I would go all out.

People value different things, therefore, they are willing to spend more for some things that others would consider a waste. For example, I know someone who is a very busy executive who would rather spend the money to hire an escort than waste his valuable time going out, meeting someone, dating, etc., just to have sex. He figures a hundred bucks to get off is just another type of therapy. Where as someone who has more time, might feel hiring an escort is a waste of money when he can go out to a bar and score for the price of a few beers.

A co-worker told me I was cheap once because I iron my clothes instead of taking them to the dry cleaners. However, the reason that I don’t take my clothes to the dry cleaners is because I find it’s more of a hassle to drop them off and pick them up before they close than to just iron them myself.
