Aborted Fetus Dispute

Operation Rescue is in the middle of a dispute about a recent aborted fetus that they claim was alive:

The pro-life group Operation Rescue has obtained the autopsy report for Baby Rowan, the infant said to have been born alive on April 2, 2005, at a Florida abortion mill and whose mother claims was refused help by abortion workers in spite of her pleas on behalf of her dying son

Abortion mill? Don’t you mean clinic? Sounds like another clouded term like abortion on demand – like it is DirecTV or something.

I’m still researching the details on this because the autopsy reported: (via Evangelical Underground)

Forensically, there was no evidence that the fetus was born alive.

I think what is happening is that the autopsy doesn’t list any visible trauma from the needlemarks used to inject the chemicals that begin the extraction process so the pro-life groups are saying that means the fetus was aborted ‘alive’ – there are three different points to the Born Alive Infant Protection Act of 2002: heartbeat, voluntary movement or puslating umblical cord. The pregnant woman is saying that the fetus was delivered into the toilet at the clinic and that the fetus/baby turned towards her when she spoke and her demands for medical assistance were denied. If the fetus was born alive then it becomes a baby and denying care to a child invokes a whole other set of statutes.

Like I said, I’m still re-reading everything but the headline Aborted Baby Born Alive seems like a misnomer. If the abortion had been successfully carried out the fetus would not have been extracted alive. A terrible story all around.

Anything the evangelicals report (living aborted fetus?) I immediately toss in the trash bin. These are the people who think they have THE answer not only to the great mysteries of life but now also The Constitution. Ugh. As the mind is our most powerful tool and their minds have been usurped by irrational supremacist type religious ideologies, I’m not sure what can reach their lost little souls. Egad! Luckily there still exist many faithful and non-faithful who don’t subsribe to their rigid way of thinking. 🙂 Patrick of QueerVisions.com

After the conference this weekend, I’m trying to be more fairminded and court those that I disagree with. I want to understand what assumptions they are making – which ones I am making – and how we are reading the facts.

So it was born alive–big deal. It was eventually going to die—why not in the toilet by drowning? Instead she had to pick the damn thing up and hold it and watch it die in her arms. Damn those maternal instincts—they really get in the way of true happiness.
