What Dick Durbin Should Have Said

Dammit this doesn’t sound like I’m feeling… I can’t believe Durbin backpedaled in the face of Tom Delay. Here’s what he should have said.

On June 14, I took the floor of the Senate to speak about genuine heartfelt concerns about the treatment of prisoners and detainees at Guantanamo and other places. Mr. President, I have come to understand that was a very poor choice of words.

I would like to amend my statement that the practices of extraordinary rendition, indefinite detention without charges, secret prisons run by the Central Intelligence Agency, the violation of the Geneva Conventions and the systematic torture and disappearing of individuals is a gross injustive that aligns our countries security policy with the most oppressive regimes in modern history.

These policies put our own soldiers in grave danger in the even that they are ever prisoners of war. Other countries can use the same justifications that we are using to exact violence and pain on our own men and women in the armed forces – as well as private American citizens.

I sincerely regret if what I said causes anybody to misunderstand my true feelings.

Or just go read Steve’s rant.
