My sister sent me this link to Public Data’s sex offender database. Wow. I got a ton of them living all around me.

Hmm, the guy whose mail I get a lot is a rapist. I guess that’s good to know.
COMMENT:
I understand the value in this information, but at the same time, I can’t help but feel sad at the same time. What if someone did something inappropriate at some point in their life, paid for their mistake and now they have to live with it forever. Perhaps I have too much empathy. Depending upon the crime, the trauma of the victim may far outweigh the consequences of the perpetrator. -
It is a conflict because this information is available in the public record anyway – only now it is searchable and available to anyone in the world with the click of a button.

I’m not sure that everyone deserves the privilege of that power. Some people are even more unbalanced and troubled than the people in the database. It’s a problem that has no solution because the benefit of society as a whole outweighs the misuse by a few.

That is always my bone to pick with all of these systems to collate massive private and public databases (Total Information Awareness, etc.). I don’t doubt that the database can be powerful I just doubt that it can’t be infallible and I don’t trust the users who will have access to it – to use it for less than official purposes.
