Rumsfelds's 9-11 Keepsake

From the AP: (via Burnt Orange Report)

The Justice Department investigation that criticized FBI agents for taking souvenirs from the World Trade Center site also found that Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and a high-ranking FBI official kept items from the Sept. 11 attack scenes. The final investigatory report said the Justice Department inspector general confirmed Rumsfeld “has a piece of the airplane that flew into the Pentagon.”

Aboslutely appalling, disgusting. Will the arrogance and faux-reverence never cease?

I think that’s obstruction of justice. He’s holding a piece of evidence from a mass murder. That’s illegal.

    COMMENT:
Doesn’t surprise me one bit I’m sad to say.

It speaks volumes about his character and those around him.

Is it any different than a soldier keeping a dog tag from a buddy killed in Vietnam or a Hawaiian keeping a bullet from the sand at Pearl Harbor? Rumsfeld was at the Pentagon on Sept.11. Certainly, being there and seeing what happened would have a huge effect on any person. He said he keeps it “as a reminder of the tragedy Pentagon workers shared on Sept. 11, 2001.” America easily forgets. We?ve heard ?September 11TH? and ?9/11 attacks? so many times, we?ve become desensitized. Have you watched archived news footage from Sept. 11 or been to ground zero? It brings back the memories of how horrible that day was. I?m glad the Defense Secretary has a piece of the plane in his office (at the Pentagon) to remind himself, and others, of the reality of what that day was like and the thousands of lives lost. It?s important, especially for the Defense Secretary to remember. Appalling? Arrogant? I respectfully disagree. It’s not like he’s trying to sell it on e-bay.

I think it is different than the cases you mention. Keeping the dog tag of a buddy killed in Vietnam means you were there in the war risking your life and hopefully trying to eventually deliver that dogtag to the family of the fallen soldier.

A bullet from Pearl Harbor was not a piece of evidence in a terrorist attack whose investigation was stalled and re-routed and will ultimately be under-funded (compare this to the space shuttle investigation).

A piece of one of the planes what flew into the WTC is not a souvenir – it is evidence.

9-11 remains a lucky break for the neo-conservative movement in American politics. It created massive fear in a population eager for safety (and revenge) – and the pushing through of massive and far-reaching legislation through Congress i.e. pre-emptive war, Congress abdicating war powers to the Executive branch, Homeland Security, wiping our ass with the Geneva Convention, racist immigration policies, gutting the EPA, pillaging social programs and imperialist forieng policy…
