Ragan Fox on Brokeback Mountain

Great quote from Ragan’s rant Brokeback:

Mr. Lee, why did you and your team make the casting choices that you did? In what ways  do you think you are complicit in denying gay men opportunities to speak for and as themselves?

Overall he loved the film but I thought that swatch was great. Could Lee have made his film without casting established straight actors? Would it have been as successful? Would countless talk shows ask the annoying condescending OMG WHAT WAS IT LIKE battery of questions.

Like many people, I would have liked to see out gay actors play those roles. But who? Nathan Lane and Harvey Fierstein? Can’t you just imagine Harvey croaking out, “I wish I knew how to quit you.”? 🙂

On the other hand, I didn’t expect them to cast an actual cannibal in “Silence of the Lambs.” 🙂

I’m more impressed with the fact that this story got told as opposed to knowing the sexuality of the story tellers. Continuing that line of questioning of Ang Lee implies that “Gay Actors need only apply”.

Suppose Chad Allen was too busy pissing off religious folks to take the job. Or maybe he’s still trying to shed his Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman image.
