The Pentagon has now decided to treat detainees within the requirements of the Geneva Conventions:
- “The Pentagon has decided that it will treat all detainees in compliance with the minimum standards spelled out in the Geneva conventions.”
- SCOTUS found that Geneva Common Article 3 applied to terror suspects (going against the White House)
- “In 2002, Bush declared that members of Al Qaeda and other terror suspects seized during the invasion of Afghanistan were “illegal combatants,” and so were not entitled to the protections of the Geneva conventions. Among other things, the conventions set forth rules for the treatment of prisoners of war.”

New documents shows senior Defense Department officials ignored requests from commanders in Afghanistan for clarification on which interrogation measures could be used on prisoners held by US troops. These include the use of military dogs, stress positions, sleep adjustment and environmental manipulation. When commanders failed to receive a response to their request, they took the Pentagon’s silence as proof the measures had been approved.
