Oregon County Bans All Marriages

Mom says that if we can’t share then nobody gets to play with the toys:

The last marriage licenses were handed out in Benton County at 4 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. EST) Tuesday. As of Wednesday, officials in the county of 79,000 people will begin telling couples applying for licenses to go elsewhere until the gay marriage debate is settled.

Wow. That’s one way to push for action.

    COMMENT:
Think about how many poor schmoes are being saved from the nightmare that is marriage. “Sorry, honey… can’t marry you – it’s the law.” Tee hee.

maybe we should just ban Oregon period….I hope they prosecute those people who performed same-sex marriages to the full extent. Afterall, it was and is ILLEGAL.

i see we have a supporter of discrimination, ignorance and bigotry among us. flounder: if marriage is exist either in civil society it is to be so for whomever wishes it regardless of gender. period. it is those who wish it who define it and when ignorance and prejudice are factored out there remains NO RIGHT for anyone to prevent others to enter such union on the grounds of gender. PERIOD. this means that no other opinion is tolerable on the matter. the “wrong” opinion on objective matters is neither sacred nor acceptable. an educated adult has the responsibility and duty to inform himself of fact and espouse only the correct stance on issues in which such position can be determined. by whom, you might ask? well, you’ve made a good choice stopping round here. you may also ask me, since modesty apart, and to quote david brinkley, everybody’s entitled to my opinion! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ™‚

Blessed is the man who, having nothing to stay, abstains from giving us worthy evidence of the fact. No Flounder, same-sex marriages are not ILLEGAL, they are just not recognized as being valid.

So now the majority of Americans are ignorant bigots? Sorry but you’re exposing your own liberal hypocrisy through intolerance of others. But hey, I realize people such as yourself believe everyone should do as they please, less they risk being marginalized.

Sorry, but criminal charges are being brought against the people who had no legal authority to perform same-sex marriages. Last I checked, that meant its illegal, unless liberals want to change the definition of that as well: “It depends on what the definition of “is” is…”

Sorry flounder, wrong again. The same sex marriages in Oregon were not illegal, and those who performed these marriages had every legal authority to do so. The gay couples obtained a marriage license and were married accordingly. There are not any criminal charges being brought against anyone who performed these same-sex marriages and no one, aside from yourself apparently, is arguing that there should. The issue is whether or not the licenses, and thus the marriages, are valid.

Perhaps you are confusing what happened in Oregon with what happened in New York. The issue in New York is completely different. There, no marriage licenses were obtained and couples were married. The mayor who performed these marriages is charged with violating New York?s Domestic Relations Law which requires anyone who solemnizes a marriage license to have a license presented to him/her? he didn?t do that, regardless of whom the marriage was between. The criminal legal issue in New York has nothing to do with same-sex marriages.

No, but there may be one posting here lately.

Yes, you are correct about the situation in Oregon. However, the State Attorney General there has stated that the issuance of marriage licenses to same sex partners is clearly a violation of state law. These licenses will eventually be declared invalid, and those officials who continue to preside over same sex marriages (such as those in NY) will be held accountable.

I’d like to respond to this comment (which in itself expresses intolerance) by repeating what I said below.

I believe that marriage (regardless of what it has become) was instituted by God to be a sacred union between a man and a woman as a mutual bond for love and the production of children. I believe it is God’s law that would be violated if homosexuals were allowed to marry, not mine. I do believe that homosexuality is repugnant to God, but I am not their judge. But I know what the Bible, which I believe to be the word of God, has to say. And He is their judge.

If belief in the Bible marks me down as a bigot, intolerant, ignorant, or closed-minded, then I guess that’s what I am.

I believe that legitimizing gay marriage will only be another dark blot on our ledger among many others like abortion. It is one we will answer for because you never really “get away” with anything. It takes us away from the light.

Flounder, although I disagree, I have absolute respect for your right to have and express your opinion. I don?t respect, however, one who argues with ignorance of the facts or simply feels the need to misstate them.

The Oregon Attorney General, in his legal opinion to the Governor, stated that ?[t]he Oregon Supreme Court likely would conclude that withholding from same-sex couples the legal rights, benefits and obligations that under current law are automatically granted to married couples of the opposite sex violates [the constitution.]”— ?These licenses will eventually be declared invalid?, ummm, the AG said the opposite.

As far as the AG stating that the issuance of licenses to same-sex couples is clearly contrary to current statutory law. Well, yeah, no surprise there. It?s pretty clear and everyone agrees, after all, that IS the issue. The question is does that statute pass Constitutional muster? No, according to the AG.

As far as your comment that ?those officials who continue to preside over same sex marriages will be held accountable?, no where in this Country is it illegal to preside over a same-sex marriage. NO WHERE.

You have cited religion as a basis for your beliefs, and I completely respect that. I want to respond, but I don?t want to offend. If I do, I sincerely apologize. Above, you stated ?I believe it is God’s law that would be violated if homosexuals were allowed to marry, not mine? but yet you concluded that ?I believe that legitimizing gay marriage will only be another dark blot on our ledger.? Why? Without citing the Bible or God, what is it that YOU find repugnant about homosexuality? Do YOU have a basis for YOUR belief, or do you live your life seeing things as others tell you to see them? I believe that patterning your beliefs around other’s opinions, whoever they are, is nothing more than slavery. I give you the last word and wish you well.

Andy, I apologize for taking up so much space, but he started it :-). I love your blog. I should start my own.

Well, first of all I appreciate that you restrain from personally attacking me for my religious beliefs or labelling me as a bigot, as that would be diametrically opposed to the type of tolerance being argued for.

However, I thought that I explained the basis for my belief. I don’t see that following God’s will as slavery (although it certainly isn’t always easy, we are all sinners). On the contrary, I see those who are constantly engaged in sinful behaviour or “lifestyles” as the ones being enslaved, whether it be the liar, thief, aldulterer, homosexual or otherwise. I realize this is a difficult concept for the non-believer to grasp. But I promise you that living a life to do as you please, because otherwise you would feel a slave to others opinions or beliefs, will only lead to unfullfillment and emptiness. God is waiting, peace be with you.

As a non-believer in fascism, I find genocide, one party rule, and militarism difficult to grasp.

  14. sam Avatar

I’m not sure what’s so hard to grasp. Your religion is not MY religion, and your religious beliefs should not be legally imposed on me.

But if you’d like marriage to be specifically a religious event – and have no government involvement (meaning no tax breaks, no marriage licenses, no special rights, no transfer of property, nothing), then you could keep it even more sanctimonius, and that would be okay ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sounds like they’re taking the easy way out if you ask me. But I guess the people running the county know best. They DID elect them, so now they have to deal with their decision.

So we’re not only ignorant bigots but also fascist as well, hey? More “progressive” thoughts, perhaps.

“I’m not sure what’s so hard to grasp. Your religion is not MY religion, and your religious beliefs should not be legally imposed on me.”

Its funny how gays want so badly to be married, yet they reject the very foundation of what the institution has been based on for thousands of years.

Careful folks – remember we’re stepping dangerously close to Godwin’s Law.

  18. sam Avatar

When you talk about what “marriage” has been based on for “thousands of years,” you are talking specifically of your religious institutions. We are talking about marriage as a civil, LEGAL right.

At least 50% of you straights don’t give a flying fuck about your so-called version of “marriage.”

How many divorces have you had,____ ?

    oregon county bans ALL marriages

a county in the western state of oregon has banned all marriages, same-gender and hetero, until the state decides whether ignorance and bigotry will remain the law.
