London Police Witheld Info Over Man Shot in the Head Seven Times

A senior British police officer withheld information from superiors and misled the public after learning that police wrongly killed a Brazilian electrician, mistaking him for a terrorist, an inquiry into the killing reported Thursday. The Independent Police Complaints Commission report said that Assistant Commissioner Andy Hayman, head of London’s police counterterrorism unit, allowed the police force to issue a press release soon after the shooting that said it was unknown if the dead man was a terrorist. Hours earlier, Hayman told journalists that the man was not linked to the previous day’s failed attempt to detonate bombs on London’s transit system. Jean Charles de Menezes, 27, was shot seven times in the head in a subway car by counterterrorism police hunting suspects following London’s 2005 transit bombings.
