I’m in the middle of reading Walking the Sacred Path: Rediscovering the Labyrinth as a Spiritual Tool. It was on sale at Unabridged and I remembered lingering over it for a possible tattoo design inspiration. I had never really stopped and considered the difference between a maze and a labyrinth. That a labyrinth has no dead-ends. No tricks. No traps. That the only choices are to enter it, to keep going further, or to turn back. It is an inevitable (though curved) path.
The author of the book does workshops of having people walk a labyrinth design on the floor in silent meditation – that there is something primal in this design that awakens (or stills) the mind. She decodes the labyrinth (citing the Chartres Cathedral’s design as the earliest extant Christian-centered example – from 1200 A.D.) as a meditation and journey towards the feminine. That many imagine a heart or a rose at the center of the design – a potent symbol of the Sacred Mother Mary.
More when I finish.
