"The testimony at trial was that Burge led a group of Chicago detectives who spent the 1970s and 1980s routinely and systematically torturing crime suspects. The detectives used cattle prods to shock and burn their victims. They used plastic bags and typewriter covers to suffocate them until they lost consciousness. They used phone books to beat them. They put guns to their heads and played Russian roulette. When those victims could take no more- they confessed to crimes they did not commit."
