John Kerry's Godwin

As any net-head knows, Godwin’s law states:

As a discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.” There is a tradition in many groups that, once this occurs, that thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress.

In much the same vein, “terrah” has become the Godwin for Mr. Bush – a term to cease all exploration, dialectic and discussion. The (real or imagined or manufactured) threat of terrorism becomes an excuse to retract and restrict civil liberties and promote and extend shitty financial policy.

OxBlog reports that John Kerry uses the same approach with national security, that his status as a Vietnam vet shields him from any criticism or discussion:

He, like every veteran, deserves thanks and praise from every American for what he did there. But that doesn’t insulate him from criticism based on what he’s done since — his anti-war activities when he returned are fair game; his votes in the Senate are fair game; his statements on Iraq are fair game.
