HR 5122 Allows President to Station Troops Within US to Suppress Public Disorder Without Consent of Governors

You thought that torture bill was bad – that same day this got signed:

President Bush has signed into law a provision which, according to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), will actually encourage the President to declare federal martial law. It does so by revising the Insurrection Act, a set of laws that limits the President’s ability to deploy troops within the United States. The Insurrection Act (10 U.S.C.331 -335) has historically, along with the Posse Comitatus Act (18 U.S.C.1385), helped to enforce strict prohibitions on military involvement in domestic law enforcement. With one cloaked swipe of his pen, Bush is seeking to undo those prohibitions.

[A]llows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder."

This move didn’t surprise me at all, though it does scare the crap out of me. Some days I get the feeling that Bush is trying to set himself up as king. That may sound a little extreem but lets face it, it has happened before. Rome was a Republic before Julius Caeser was crowned and that point in time represents the beginning of the decline of the Roman Empire. France became a Republic and then subsequently crowned Napoleon Bonaparte Emporer leading them down a path of ruin. There are to this day people out there who would see Democracy dismantled and a return to a feudalistic society. Check out the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property, (TFP). (http://www.tfp.org/). They have chapters around the world and support a return to feudalism. The founder of their Brazilian chapter, Plinio Correa de Oliveira, wrote a book called ‘Nobility and Analogous Traditional Elites in the Allocutions of Pius XII: A Theme Illuminating American Social History’ which discuses their ‘Utopian’ feudal model. These are some very scary, very powerful, very wealthy people.
