George Bush and 50 Cent: Hip Hop Reflects Culture

Poet Saul Williams writes an open letter to Oprah:

Hip Hop is simply a reflection of the society that birthed it. Our love affair with gangsterism and the denigration of women is not rooted in Hip Hop; rather it is rooted in the very core of our personal faith and religions. The gangsters that rule Hip Hop are the same gangsters that rule our nation.

Our love affair with gangsterism and the denigration of women is not rooted in Hip Hop; rather it is rooted in the very core of our personal faith and religions. The gangsters that rule Hip Hop are the same gangsters that rule our nation. 50 Cent and George Bush have the same birthday (July 6th).

Censorship will never solve our problems. It will only foster the sub-cultures of the underground, which inevitably inhabit the mainstream. There is nothing more mainstream than the denigration of women as projected through religious doctrine. Please understand, I am by no means opposing the teachings of Jesus, by example (he wasn’t Christian), but rather the men that have used his teachings to control and manipulate the masses.

i agree and disagree. i think you are very deep and insightful, however – you are underestimating the power of words. coin a phrase to explain behavior. words are recorded in the mind, hear them enough – they become truth. hear them enough – you don’t have to hear them anymore. the mind says them when there’s no one to say it for you, or to you, or about you. it is to “THE-MAN’S” bliss that young men and women are actively participating in a glamorization and mainstream culture of classifying women in such derogatory ways. Violence, ugliness, devaluation of humanity, it’s a cultural environment that exists more real in the minds of our media intoxicated society than the ocean or the air or the sand. People are so consumed they can’t even see reality – that being an ass hole is not a reaction. It is a personal choice. and as long as we keep trying to rationalize it, and seek to understand it, and explain it’s origin & meaning and come to some social tolerance for the sake of causative example accepting the need to identify because of the underlying manifestation of it’s roots embedded in a compliance to a hypocritical theocracy that ……do you get it? It’s just wrong. I’m sick of it. Philosophy is best when it walks in time with common good.
