FBI Uses National Security Letters to Investigate – Without Oversight

30,000 Americans every year receive a National Security Letter from the FBI

  1. From section 505 of USA PATRIOT Act
    • No expiration date or sunset clause.
    • FBI does not have to disclose what it is looking for
  2. Cannot be used to authorize eavesdropping or email reading.
    • Collected data is stored after investigation/need is over
    • Can be shared freely among government agencies
    • Can be used for records about where a person spends money, their current and previous residences, travels, investments, web searches, telephone and email contacts.
