Ethics in America

Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen in Wall StreetIt’s no secret Americans are dishonest lying bastards. But is this any different from any other country or culture or time in history? Are the stakes just higher and mechanics make fraud easier and at the same time more massive? David Callahan, author of The Cheating Culture chimes in with his take. I had a friend (ahem) who took AP Calculus in high school and the teacher would leave the room for long periods of time during tests so they could cooperate together in the testing (never underestimate the cunning of Honor students). The pinnacle was when one student stood up and he called out the steps for a derivative proof. In retrospect – yes, it was cheating – but at the same time it was an example of teamwork, right? My dad always taught his fifth grade class the fuzziness of cheating versus being cooperative. I still ascribe the Enron situation as one of the recent events that got me politically activated – the sheer greed in pillaging the retirement of your employees really got to me. (via MeFi)
