Downward Slide

A good friend is going through an amazingly hellish break-up. It’s two guys – the one that was on the receiving end of the break-up is in an absolute downward spiral. He’s been hospitalized for a week after threatening to kill himself. He’s done an ‘I’m HIV+’ false alarm and many other antics He’s lost 20 pounds in a matter of weeks. He quit his job. In effect, crucifying himself hoping that his partner will feel terrible and take him back. The story is much more involved than that and I won’t do any more dishing. It is crazy and heart-breaking to see this happen. I hope they both emerge from this maelstrom.

  1. Are you certain that the break-up was the cause of the subsequent problems or was there an existing problem which led to the break-up which, in turn, hastened the downward spiral?

Just wondering because I’ve spent two years unemployed or underemployed. The stress can be overwhelming and has a very negative effect on relations with others.

In any event, I deeply sympathize with your friend.
Even if you just patiently sit and listen to what he has to say, your presence will be appreciated much more than you may ever realize.
