Deep Throat Was a Hero

What the hell is this crying and screaming about Felt being a traitor? He was a fucking patriot. He had the nuts to blow the whistle on one of the most repugnant politicans to slither into the White House.

A patriot? Maybe, it all depends on his motivation…and we’ll never know for sure what his motivation was.

If it was purely political, then he is no patriot.

If he did it because he was a disgruntled employee who didn’t get a promotion, then he wasn’t a patriot.

    And….why the secrecy?

I think people who say he wasn’t a patriot or hero say that becuase Felt didn’t go through the legal channels with this. He instead told a reporter who passed it on to the public, igniting a firestorm of controversy that ultimately led to Nixon’s resignation.

Had Felt gone through the appropriate channels, such as going to congress or the FBI or whomever, I don’t think it would have had such a great effect. You have to have the public behind a cause in order for the gov’t to get off of its lazy ass rather than giving it time to cover it up.

What if the whistleblower from Enron had gotten through to the upper managment? Would we have heard anything about it?

Besides, as Thomas Jefferson said, “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”

Going through the “proper channels” in this case meant going to Department of Justice. The Attorney General was one of the co-conspirators. Felt did the right thing given the circumstances.

As for motivation: if a solider joins up because he needs a job & can’t find one (true of many), is a hero if he dies in combat? Motivation is not the key here.

This is almost as bad as when Regan died people started rewriting history to claim he was a good president. No mention of ketchup, remember?

Hey, I think fear of reprisal, or worse, a reasonable belief that going to the AG would lead to nothing, totally justifies going to reporters instead. One of the primary “real” functions of the media is to keep the government and other powers-that-be from keeping us in the dark!

I hope this inspires tons of informants everwhere to call their local reporters!
