Christianity Paradox

Excerpt from a Harper’s article:

  • 40% Americans can name more than four of the 10 Commandments
  • Half can cite all over Gospel authors
  • 3/4’s believe ‘God helps those who help themselves’ is in the Bible (actually Ben Franklin)

America is simultaneously the most professedly Christian of the developed nations and the least Christian in its behavior.

  • US is 85% Christian (Israel is 77% Jewish)
  • 75% pray daily
  • 33% attend church weekly

But:

  • US economy ranked second to last in foreign aid (Italy last)
  • 18% of US children live in poverty (Sweden 8%)
  • Number of housholds ‘food insecure’ rose 26% from 1999 to 2003
  • Murder rate 4-5x European peers
  • Prison population greater 6-7x to comparable nations
  • Only Western democracy that executes citizens
  • Over half of marriages end in divorce
  • Leading in teen pregnancy (Obesity, Debt, Defictis)

I concluded my comments on your posting over at my site this way:

Even if Jesus, Himself, is elected to serve as our President and even if we pass all sorts of Christian Reconstructionist legislation to clearly outline what is right and wrong; without a heart-felt change occurring because of the work of the Holy Spirit this nation will never be a truly Christian Nation!

We need to preach Christ and Him Crucified and pray for the Holy Spirit to bring revival to our land; only then will God be glorified, not by our words, but by our deeds which glorify Him.

Oh Lord… he sounds like one of those Christian fundamentalists who wants to make their own Christian nation in South Caroline and split from the U.S….

The real translation is that the U.S. is full of itself and needs to get its nose out of everyone else’s business and take care of its own people.
