How The Civil Rights Act Shaped Modern American Politics

From a discussion on Metafilter:

“The Northern Democrat + Dixiecrat coalition was an incredibly strange one, brought on by really one fact — it was a Republican President and a Republican Congress that prosecuted and won the US Civil War, so there was *no way in hell* a southerner would be Republican. So, they were Democrats, and thus were in an uneasy but stable coalition with the Northern Democrats. Meanwhile, the GOP was run basically by NE republicans, who were conservative, but nothing like today.

“What changed? The Civil Rights Act. …

“Thus began the great mix mastering of the two parties. BOTH parties split. The GOP split SW/NE, the Democrats split S/N. The Dixiecrats, after going alone, ended up joining the SW GOP, what was left of the NE GOP slowly moved into the Democratic sphere or faded away….

“By the time Reagan came along (in national terms) the realignment was all but done. There were quite a few Southern Dems still left, but they were GOP in all but name and most of them switched parties after the 1980 election.

“Seriously. There Civil Rights era defines our politics and our lives today. The rise of suburbia is not just because of the highways being built, it was a direct reaction to the riots that happened in cities during this era, the most prominent being the 1967 Detroit Riot. The reason that even dramatically conservative black populations strongly vote Democrat is they remember who the GOP — the Dixiecrats of 1950.

“No other factor since WWII affects us more. The hatred of government? Between forced integration and busing of children to balance schools, the idea that the government wasn’t actually here to help you got set into everyone minds. The lack of school funding? People with money (primarily white) pulled their kids out of the now integrated schools, put them in private schools, then voted to cut school spending massively because they weren’t sending their kids to public schools. Reagan only tapped this with the “welfare queen” schtick he pulled. Ripping out neighborhoods for highways? Needed those to get to work if you didn’t want to live with “those people.”

“Fundamentally, the US is what it is because of racism, and the GOP is what it is because they’re all for making sure that non-whites get nothing from government.”

The Democratic Party’s Fatal Flaw

From Mark Morford (who I think I’ve been reading for over a decade):

“Can you pity, for a moment, the poor Democratic party? For the horribly ironic bind it finds itself in, over and over again?

See, the party’s most fatal flaw is also its most appealing trait: It lacks the murderous cruelty and savage bloodlust of the Republicans.

“Whereas the GOP has zero qualms about flinging outright lies (birthers, science deniers, creationists, et al) to get what it wants, not to mention an ever-present air of racism, sexism and a dark mistrust/hatred of everyone from Muslims to the entire African continent, Dems have no such arsenal, and no skill to use it if they did.

“Republicans will say and do anything to win, and are utterly ruthless about how they go about it; enacting a smart, fair policy agenda is almost nowhere on their priority list. Dems are the exact opposite: terrific agenda, lots of policy, but morally unwilling to play dirty, to murder their own grandmother in cold blood and blame it on the GOP, to make it go.

“So then, consensus: Extremism and odium won; intelligence and compromise lost.”

Should Spitzer Resign?

They’re talking impeachment? Fucking impeaching of a state governor for seeing a sex worker? That’s as stupid as impeaching somebody for lying about a blowjob. Oh wait.

If he used tax-payer money to see the whores, then yeah that is a problem of integrity and that should be exposed. But a politican seeing a prostitute is about as common as well – a politician seeing a prostitute.

Don Lemon: How can a rising political star get caught in something so salacious?

Seeing a hooker is not salacious!

Are All Republicans Really Gay?

Another week, another Republican asshole caught in flagrante delicto with a man, baby.

This time WA State Rep Richard Curtis who assures he’s not gay when he caught paying $1K for bareback buttsex with a male prostitute dressed in woman’s lingerie.

Curtis is married with children — and votes conservatively. He has voted against a domestic partnership bill, and a bill that would have outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation. “This has been damaging to my family, and I don’t want to subject them to any additional pain that might result from carrying out this matter under the scrutiny that comes with holding public office.”

Let me fix that for you:

My actions have been damaging to my money-grubbing political career, and I don’t want to subject them to any additional pain that might result from subjecting my personal actions to the scrutiny and comparison to my legislative record that comes with holding public office.

Cue Malkin and the gang: How dare all those nasty liberal bloggers attack this man because of actions he does in his own privacy.

I honestly don’t care if he’s DVDA’ed by the Village People while dressed like Murphy Brown (coming soon from Titan), that is his private consensual sex life and he doesn’t need to be used to evaluate the options and equality he has in his own country – unless he makes the private sex lives of other citizens fair game and builds his career on fear-mongering lies to enrich his own big flappy gay poofy-pants pockets.

Well I guess a guy technical can’t be DVDA’ed but you know what I mean.

Ahmadinejad Wins

From Sam Sedaei:

He knew that the city was home to over two million Jews, and that he would face massive protests. But that is precisely the martyr-like image that he was intending to create.

The president of Columbia’s criticisms of Ahmadinejad’s crimes before his speech was very constructive. But Bollinger did the cause of free speech and America’s image in the Middle East a great deal of disservice when he went on for almost 19 minutes name-calling Ahmadinejad before allowing him to speak and not really thanking him for accepting Columbia’s invitation to speak.

By keeping the focus on international issues, Columbia gave him an easy way to turn the conversation around time and again and criticize American policy.

Many Iranians hoped that Columbia would take this opportunity to keep the focus of questions on Iran’s brutal domestic policies. And yet, of the five or six questions that were asked, astonishingly, only one related to human rights

Belgium Ventures Towards Schism

From the NYT:

Radical Flemish separatists like Mr. Dewinter want to slice the country horizontally along ethnic and economic lines: to the north, their beloved Flanders — where Dutch (known locally as Flemish) is spoken and money is increasingly made — and to the south, French-speaking Wallonia, where a kind of provincial snobbery was once polished to a fine sheen and where today old factories dominate the gray landscape.

Hanlon’s Razor and Grey’s Law

Came across this in MeFi and found more in Wikipedia – Hanlon’s Razor states that:

Never assume malice when stupidity will suffice.

The related corollary (converse?) is Grey’s Law:

Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.

Mitt’s Makeup, Edwards’s Haircuts

Can we dispense with all the Oooh they spend money on their personal appearance so they must be effette cheese-eating surrender monkeys coverage? I would hope my politicans and candidates spend money a stylist and a makeup artist as needed just like I hope they choose designers for their sites, mailings and bumper stickers.

When I am inaugurated I’m gonna be so Botoxed my entire face won’t move. I’ll have so much makeup on I’ll have to sweat out the backs of my knees.

Mitt Romney Made Millions of Pay-Per-View Hotel Porn

From HuffPost

There are vague grumblings on the right-wing web sites about another Mitt Romney values issue. This one involves his ten years as a board member at Marriott, and how they seem to have made millions of dollars off in-room porn. Millions and millions. And millions. According to an article I just cut and pasted from somewhere, pay-per-view sex in American hotel rooms may generate $190 million a year. (Especially when Charlie Sheen is single.) About 1.5 million hotel rooms are wired for adult films and they make more money than the minibar, which is hard to believe, because I had a Toblerone at the Boston Ritz in 1990 and I’m still paying for it. According to another article I’m lazily plagiarizing, Mitt Romney sat on the Marriot Board from 1993 to 2002, may or may not still own Marriot stock, and reported an $80,000 campaign donation arranged by J.W. Marriot last April.

George Bush and 50 Cent: Hip Hop Reflects Culture

Poet Saul Williams writes an open letter to Oprah:

Hip Hop is simply a reflection of the society that birthed it. Our love affair with gangsterism and the denigration of women is not rooted in Hip Hop; rather it is rooted in the very core of our personal faith and religions. The gangsters that rule Hip Hop are the same gangsters that rule our nation.

Our love affair with gangsterism and the denigration of women is not rooted in Hip Hop; rather it is rooted in the very core of our personal faith and religions. The gangsters that rule Hip Hop are the same gangsters that rule our nation. 50 Cent and George Bush have the same birthday (July 6th).

Censorship will never solve our problems. It will only foster the sub-cultures of the underground, which inevitably inhabit the mainstream. There is nothing more mainstream than the denigration of women as projected through religious doctrine. Please understand, I am by no means opposing the teachings of Jesus, by example (he wasn’t Christian), but rather the men that have used his teachings to control and manipulate the masses.
