CA Supreme Court Overturns Same-Sex Marriage Ban

"The California Supreme Court has overturned a gay marriage ban in a ruling that would make the nation’s largest state the second one to allow gay and lesbian weddings. The justices’ 4-3 decision Thursday says domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage. Chief Justice Ron George wrote the opinion." (PDF of the opinion)

Relevant text:

"Furthermore, in contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual’s capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual’s sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual’s sexual orientation — like a person’s race or gender — does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights. We therefore conclude that in view of the substance and significance of the fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship, the California Constitution properly must be interpreted to guarantee this basic civil right to all Californians, whether gay or heterosexual, and to same-sex couples as well as to opposite-sex couples."

After I read the original article, I came over here to see, and yes, Andy was on it. Thanks for the pdf of the opinion!
I am far from naive, but it still amazes me that we can live in one nation, but the difference from state to state is like a multitude of parallel universes. (or is that universi)? I currently do live in the wrong state, oh, yes I do.
This is an idea that I, for one, would like to see spread like the viral marketing viri; just like all the other labels, orientation does not make the legitimate basis for any kind of discrimination. The End.
Of course, let the dissenting opinions come a’flyin again. I read the article on Yahoo and took the associated survey, and well, my opinion was not in the majority regarding the Court’s decision.
I would like to start living life label-free and in equity, one state at a time.
