My eyes were opened at Purser Recurrent Training

United's HR attempts a snowjob with motivational speakers for its pursers – instead of a signed contract. UAL flight attendants have worked without a contract since January of last year.

Sharron Angle: God Planned Your Rape

‘Manders asks her whether there is “any reason at all for an abortion,” and she answers: “Not in my book.” For clarity, he says: “So, in other words, rape and incest would not be something?” And Angle replies with this reasoning: “You know, I’m a Christian, and I believe that God has a plan and a purpose for each one of our lives and that he can intercede in all kinds of situations and we need to have a little faith in many things.” You see, God planned your rape and pregnancy. Isn’t that reassuring?’

Rand Paul Won’t Say How Old the Earth Is

Paul, a Presbyterian layman, campaigned at a Christian Home Educators of Kentucky convention where he was peppered with questions about his religious beliefs, brushing aside one about the age of the earth that he later described as ridiculous. “I’m not running for minister,” Paul said later. “I’m more than willing to stand up and say I’m a Christian, but I don’t think I have to go into every detail of what my religious beliefs are. If I were going to be the minister of their church, they’d have a right to ask me that.”

And if you were going to be making legislative decisions based on your beliefs that might also be important.

Jackass.

Andrew Willis of Elizabethtown, who teaches his four children at home, said he hoped Paul’s answer would jibe with his own belief that the earth is about 6,000 years old. “I’m not at all surprised that he didn’t want to answer that question,” Willis said shortly after posing it. “I know that is hugely controversial.”

It’s only controversial to the people that are wrong.

Why the EPA Turned Down the Dutch

“Three days after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico began on April 20, the Netherlands offered the U.S. government ships equipped to handle a major spill, one much larger than the BP spill that then appeared to be underway. The Dutch know how to handle maritime emergencies. In the event of an oil spill, The Netherlands government, which owns its own ships and high-tech skimmers, gives an oil company 12 hours to demonstrate it has the spill in hand. If the company shows signs of unpreparedness, the government dispatches its own ships at the oil company’s expense. “The voracious Dutch vessels, for example, continuously suck up vast quantities of oily water, extract most of the oil and then spit overboard vast quantities of nearly oil-free water. Nearly oil-free isn’t good enough for the U.S. regulators, who have a standard of 15 parts per million — if water isn’t at least 99.9985% pure, it may not be returned to the Gulf of Mexico.”

Jon Burge case: Silence is no longer an option

"The testimony at trial was that Burge led a group of Chicago detectives who spent the 1970s and 1980s routinely and systematically torturing crime suspects. The detectives used cattle prods to shock and burn their victims. They used plastic bags and typewriter covers to suffocate them until they lost consciousness. They used phone books to beat them. They put guns to their heads and played Russian roulette. When those victims could take no more- they confessed to crimes they did not commit."

The Third Depression

Krugman's calling it.

The Third Depression

There was the Long Depression- then the Great Depression- and now we are in the early stages of a third depression. This one is primarily a failure of policy.
